Deadly Explosion Rocks Kabul Mosque, 21 Killed and Dozens Injured

SCRIPT:

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — A powerful explosion tore through a crowded mosque in the Afghan capital, Kabul, during evening prayers on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people and injuring 33 others, according to police reports. Among the deceased is the mosque’s imam, Amir Muhammad Kabuli.

The blast, which shattered windows in nearby buildings, occurred just a week after Islamic State (IS) militants carried out a suicide bombing that killed a pro-Taliban cleric in Kabul. The perpetrator of Wednesday's attack remains unknown, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

Eyewitnesses recounted the devastating scene, with one describing to Reuters news agency, “I saw so many people were killed, even people were thrown out of the windows of the mosque.” Security forces swiftly sealed off the area as rescue operations and investigations began.

In response to the attack, the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) took to Twitter, urging the Taliban to take "concrete steps" to prevent terrorism and provide greater protection to vulnerable communities. UNAMA highlighted the recent rise in violence, noting, “This is the latest in a disturbing series of bombings which have killed and injured more than 250 people in recent weeks, the highest monthly number of civilian casualties over the last year.”

The explosion comes amid a tense atmosphere in Kabul, following the assassination of prominent cleric and Taliban supporter Rahimullah Haqqani last week. IS claimed responsibility for Haqqani’s killing, which marked one of the highest-profile assassinations since the Taliban regained power a year ago. Meanwhile, senior Taliban officials are meeting with over 2,000 tribal and religious leaders in Kandahar, the group’s traditional power base, on Thursday. A Taliban spokesperson stated that “important decisions” are expected to be made during this significant gathering.

The attacks underscore the escalating security challenges facing Afghanistan, as the Taliban grapples with maintaining order and countering a resurgent IS presence. The situation remains tense as authorities work to stabilize the region and prevent further violence.
